Meatland typeface – Fall 2004

Meatland specimen poster

T from original signhe hand painted sign for the butcher shop I live above in Jamaica Plain inspired this typeface, which I developed as a project in a type design class at MassArt, taught by Brian Lucid.

The 7 letters available from the original sign were used as a source from which to start.

Though the original letterforms are very similar to their digital counterparts, my intention was not to create an exact replica. Instead, I wanted to borrow from the mid-century, handpainted æsthetic of the sign and it's lettering.

In order to do so, I decided to incorporate some formal qualities that didn't exist on the original sign, such as the brush-like terminals on the C and the G and the extra-low crossbar on the R.
